The Science of Skin Aging: Collagen and Wrinkles; Elastin and Sagging

As time passes, our skin inevitably begins to show signs of aging, characterized by wrinkles and sagging. These are natural consequences of a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, two vital proteins that keep our skin youthful and resilient.

Collagen acts as a supportive web, forming a lattice-like structure beneath our skin. Picture it as the framework of a cell. Over time, due to repetitive facial expressions and the natural aging process, small breaks form in this collagen network. Initially, these creases are only noticeable when we emote—like laughing or frowning—but as collagen continues to diminish, these expression lines become permanent fixtures on our face. It's interesting to note that collagen isn't just important for our skin; it's the most abundant protein in our body.

Elastin, on the other hand, functions like elastic threads woven through the collagen. It provides our skin with its bounce-back quality. But with age, our skin doesn't just lose elastin—it also loses its elasticity. This causes the sagging we often notice, particularly in areas like our cheeks and temples.

Both of these natural occurrences underline the importance of treatments like microneedling. By promoting the regeneration of collagen and elastin, microneedling offers a solution to counteract these signs of aging, ensuring skin remains vibrant, firm, and youthful.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling (also called Collagen Induction Therapy) employs a medical-grade tool to create multiple microscopic channels in the skin. These fractionated injuries, void of any thermal energy or skin removal, stimulate the skin to produce new collagen and elastin, leading to healthier and radiant skin.

  • The temporary micro channels allow for optimal delivery, penetration and diffusion of topical treatments into the skin
  • Quick, safe and effective method to induce collagen production that is non-ablative (no skin removal), requires no thermal energy and promotes quick, scar-free healing
  • Safe for all skin types with no risk of fibrosis
  • No significant downtime

Microneedling is Completely Safe and Natural

With sterile, disposable needle cartridges designed for all skin types, microneedling ensures maximum effectiveness and safety. The procedure avoids any skin removal or thermal energy usage, making healing swift and scar-free.

What to Expect in a Microneedling Procedure

Similar to mild sunburn, redness, swelling and tenderness may follow the procedure, but patients can expect no significant downtime with microneedling. After just one day, patients may return to normal activities and are able to conceal most of the signs of treatment with makeup. Within days, there will be no evidence that any treatment was performed at all.

Preparing for Microneedling

Before the procedure, our team will guide you on the best practices to ensure optimal results.

During the Procedure

Expect a procedure lasting around 30 minutes, with a sensation akin to mild sunburn.

After-Treatment Care and Healing

Post-treatment, some redness and tenderness resembling mild sunburn might occur. However, within days, any sign of the procedure fades, allowing for makeup application and a return to regular activities.

How Soon Will I See Results from Microneedling?

Since everyone’s genetic makeup and needs are different, treatment requirements and microneedling results will vary. The number of sessions required and the depth of treatment will depend on what goals/results you would like to achieve. Patients with uneven skin-tone and fine lines may see results after just one treatment, while those looking to soften the appearance of acne scarring may require several treatments.

While multiple sessions are recommended to achieve optimal microneedling results, noticeable changes are typically seen just one week following treatment and gradually improve as the body’s healing process promotes the production of healthy new cells and extracellular substances (e.g., collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid).

How Long Does it Last?

The rejuvenating effects of microneedling, particularly when maintained with recommended sessions, can last for months. The precise duration depends on individual skin conditions and desired results.

The results of microneedling usually persist for about 4 to 6 months. The procedure can be redone as frequently as every four months.

With each subsequent treatment, the effects can become more pronounced. The optimal aesthetic outcome is often seen after three to six sessions. For scar tissue, additional sessions might be necessary.

Microneedling Safety

Microneedling’s unique technology safely improves and regenerates damaged or aging skin by utilizing the natural approach to skin therapy. Our bodies have a natural repair and healing process that reacts to injury by producing new collagen and elastin. By initiating this response, microneedling harnesses the skin rejuvenation process while providing the best microneedling safety precautions on the market.

Microneedling uses sterile, disposable needle cartridges that deliver multi-speed and adjustable depths to accommodate all skin types and needs. This specific combination of design and technology increases the effectiveness of treatments and reduces pain and patient downtime.

Microneedling Side Effects

Microneedling treatment is a minimally invasive procedure, however, since the skin is being penetrated, there will be some mild effects afterward. However, many patients report little or no discomfort during the procedure. These effects will vary based on needle depth used and intensity of treatment. Acne scar treatment may produce slightly more side effects due to deeper treatment levels required.

Microneedling Benefits

  • Minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne/body scars
  • Improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation and stretch marks
