What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, in-office treatment that naturally rejuvenates the skin by stimulating its own healing process. Many patients choose microneedling because it offers a gentle yet effective way to improve fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and other common skin concerns.
Using a medical-grade precision device, microneedling creates tiny micro-channels in the skin that trigger the production of fresh collagen and elastin. Over time, this renewal process helps the skin look smoother, firmer, and more radiant. Treatments are quick, involve little to no downtime, and leave your skin feeling healthier and refreshed.
The Science of Skin Aging
As we age, our skin naturally begins to show visible changes like wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. These concerns are linked to a gradual decline in two key proteins, collagen and elastin, that are essential for maintaining firm, youthful-looking skin.
Collagen and Wrinkles
Collagen acts as the skin’s supportive framework, creating a strong, lattice-like structure beneath the surface. Over time, repetitive facial expressions and the natural aging process cause tiny breaks in this network. At first, these creases only appear when we laugh, frown, or squint, but as collagen production continues to decline, expression lines become permanent. Collagen is not only critical for healthy skin, it’s also the most abundant protein in the body.
Elastin and Sagging
Elastin works like the skin’s built-in “bounce,” allowing it to stretch and return to shape. As elastin fibers break down and elasticity diminishes, the skin begins to sag, most noticeably in the cheeks, jawline, and temples.
How Microneedling Helps
Microneedling directly addresses these age-related changes by stimulating the body’s natural repair process. By encouraging new collagen and elastin production, this treatment helps smooth wrinkles, firm lax skin, and restore a more vibrant, youthful appearance.

Learn MoreHow Microneedling Works
Microneedling (also called Collagen Induction Therapy) employs a medical-grade tool to create multiple microscopic channels in the skin. These fractionated injuries, void of any thermal energy or skin removal, stimulate the skin to produce new collagen and elastin, leading to healthier and radiant skin.
- The temporary micro channels allow for optimal delivery, penetration and diffusion of topical treatments into the skin
- Quick, safe and effective method to induce collagen production that is non-ablative (no skin removal), requires no thermal energy and promotes quick, scar-free healing
- Safe for all skin types with no risk of fibrosis
- No significant downtime
What to Expect with Microneedling
Microneedling is a simple, in-office procedure that offers impressive results with little disruption to your routine. Most patients describe the experience as comfortable, with only mild, temporary side effects that resemble a light sunburn.
Preparing for Your Treatment
Before your appointment, our team will review your goals and provide clear instructions to help you achieve the best possible outcome. This may include guidance on skincare products to use (or avoid) prior to treatment.
During the Procedure
A typical microneedling session lasts about 30 minutes. As the device creates micro-channels in the skin, you may notice a sensation similar to mild sunburn. The treatment is quick and well tolerated.
After-Treatment Care and Healing
Following the procedure, you may experience some redness, swelling, or tenderness, but these effects are temporary and fade within a few days. Many patients return to normal activities the next day and can use makeup to conceal any mild pinkness. Within a week, the skin usually shows no visible signs of treatment.
When Will I See Results?
Results vary depending on your skin type, concerns, and treatment depth. Some patients with fine lines or uneven tone notice improvements after just one session, while those treating acne scars often require multiple sessions. Most people see visible results within a week, with continued improvements over time as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production are stimulated.
How Long Do Results Last?
Microneedling results typically last 4–6 months, though they can be extended with follow-up treatments. The procedure may be repeated as often as every four months. For the best outcome, a series of three to six sessions is usually recommended, especially for deeper concerns like scarring. With each treatment, results become more noticeable, leaving your skin looking smoother, firmer, and healthier.

Microneedling Safety
Microneedling’s unique technology safely improves and regenerates damaged or aging skin by utilizing the natural approach to skin therapy. Our bodies have a natural repair and healing process that reacts to injury by producing new collagen and elastin. By initiating this response, microneedling harnesses the skin rejuvenation process while providing the best microneedling safety precautions on the market.
Microneedling uses sterile, disposable needle cartridges that deliver multi-speed and adjustable depths to accommodate all skin types and needs. This specific combination of design and technology increases the effectiveness of treatments and reduces pain and patient downtime.
Microneedling Side Effects
Microneedling treatment is a minimally invasive procedure, however, since the skin is being penetrated, there will be some mild effects afterward. However, many patients report little or no discomfort during the procedure. These effects will vary based on needle depth used and intensity of treatment. Acne scar treatment may produce slightly more side effects due to deeper treatment levels required.

SkinPen is clinically proven to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in patients aged 22 and older, and it is suitable for all skin types.
As a specialized microneedling device, SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue.
