Women who have over-sized breasts can often experience back pain, bra strap indentations, excessive drooping, general discomfort, and embarrassment. A breast reduction can go a long way in alleviating the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with overly large breasts. By removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, then tightening and contouring the remaining skin, breast reduction can make your breasts more proportionate to your body and achieve a more youthful-looking bust line.
Breast reduction differs from breast lifts in the respect that, breast reduction transforms overly large, or marginally large breasts into smaller, more portioned breasts relative to body size. Often times, a breast reduction will require a combined breast lift procedure when large amounts are removed and the reduction requires an incision. Breast reduction incisions follow patterns very similar to breast lift incisions.
The anchor pattern (incision made around the areola, vertically down the breast and horizontally along the crease) is ideal for women with extremely large breast and is the most effective however it also produces the most scarring. The vertical incision (incision around the areola and vertically down the breast) is ideal for women who have moderately large breast and do not require extensive tissue removal. The short scar technique can also be used to leave small, vertical scars that tend to heal well because of their location. Liposuction can also be used to reduce breast size but is only effective in treating fat tissue and will not remove glandular tissue or skin. Ideal candidates for liposuction have more fatty tissue than glandular tissue and do not need a large change in volume.
The nipple will be repositioned higher up on the breast. The surgeon may or may not need to remove the nipple from the breast and then graft it in the correct place. Usually women with very large breasts require the nipple to be removed to be repositioned.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery usually takes about 2 weeks, in which case patients can normally return their job if its physically undemanding. Patients will normally experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for the first few days. Vigorous physical activities should be avoided for up to 6 weeks, as they may damage the healing process.
