Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Centre For Cosmetic Surgery

Eyes are the most expressive and intriguing facial feature in body language, making them one of the most important elements in making a youthful impression. In general, eyelid surgery corrects the excess skin, tissue and fat that contribute to puffiness and bags in both the upper and lower eyelids, revealing a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. It is an excellent choice for patients who have multiple issues with the eyelids, simply for cosmetic reasons, or to improve eyesight by lifting droopy eyelids.

Surgical Eyelid Procedures

Eyelid surgery can involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both depending upon the goals of the surgery and are commonly combined with a brow lift, BOTOX Cosmetic treatment or dermal fillers, and/or laser procedures for optimal rejuvenation.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery involves placement of incisions in the natural crease of the upper lid, making them well hidden when the eyes are open. The excess skin and protruding fat are removed and the incision is closed. The procedure is completed in approximately 45-60 minutes.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery can correct conditions with an incision just below the lower lash line. Excess skin is removed through this incision. An incision hidden inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision) may also be used to correct lower eyelid conditions and redistribute or remove excess fat. The latter method leaves no visible scaring. The skin is then readjusted for a tighter fit and excess fat and skin is trimmed away.

Upper & Lower Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours to complete if both upper and lower eyelids are completed at the same time. Typically, a local anesthetic is combined with conscious sedation.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Patients need about a week to recover, and, for several weeks, you may have some swelling and redness in the eyelid areas. Sensitivity to light may also be experienced, so it is very important that you practice careful sun protection until the healing process is fully complete. Cold compresses and ointments to aid the healing process and reduce swelling may be used. Patients can usually return to work in approximately one week. Contact lenses may not be worn for two weeks. Eyes can be sensitive to light and wind and may be slightly irritated for a short while.

  • Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Ideal candidates have realistic expectations for procedure, are in good medical health, can commit to proper recovery time, who do not smoke or have any serious eye conditions, and have loose, sagging skin, or puffy bags around and under their eyes.

  • Can I wear make-up after eyelid surgery?

Make-up can usually be worn one week after surgery.

  • Will I have scarring following a blepharoplasty?

As with any operational surgery scaring is unavoidable. Dr. Malek will be sure to place incisions in the most inconspicuous locations so that they can be well hidden in the natural folds of the body. They can also be minimized with proper care and recovery to the point that they may be unnoticeable.

  • How much does eyelid surgery cost?
