If extreme weight loss, gravity, aging, or pregnancy have caused your breasts to droop and sag, a breast lift can remove excess fat and skin from the breasts and tighten the surrounding tissue to reshape and support a more natural contour. A breast lift is often combined with breast augmentation surgery to increase both the firmness and size of the breasts. The nipples and areolas may also be re-positioned to create the most natural appearance possible.
In most cases, a breast lift surgery can be performed under general anesthesia. Beginning with an incision encircling the areola, women with smaller breasts and mild sagging may only require periareolar (doughnut) or circumvertical (lollipop) incisions. Excess skin or fat may be removed depending on the situation, and the nipple and areola will be relocated to a higher position. Women who have larger breasts and more severe case of sagging, may require anchor-shaped incisions. Although this is the more invasive method, it offers the best end result. Breast lift surgery can often be paired with breast implants and/or fat transfer to offer even more volume.
Breast Lift patients will normally experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for the first few days. You can typically return to work in about a week, as long as it’s physically undemanding. Vigorous physical activities, including bending and lifting, should be avoided for up to 6 weeks, as they may complicate and slow recovery. You will also need to wear a compression garment or bra as this will minimize your discomfort, and prevent your incisions from opening up. Also, when you reduce the movement of your breasts, they are more likely to keep their new shape.
