Understanding Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
The eyes are often considered the most expressive and captivating feature of the face, playing a key role in how we communicate and the impression we make. Unfortunately, the delicate skin around the eyes is also one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Loose skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags can create a tired, aged appearance, even when you feel energetic and well-rested.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is designed to correct excess skin, tissue, and fat in the upper and/or lower eyelids. By addressing these concerns, the procedure can restore a smoother, more refreshed look while enhancing the natural contours of the eyes. For some patients, eyelid surgery is performed purely for cosmetic reasons, while for others it is medically necessary to improve vision by lifting drooping upper lids. In both cases, the result is a brighter, more youthful appearance that reflects how you truly feel.
Surgical Eyelid Procedures
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on what the patient is hoping to accomplish. Some patients seek treatment to improve vision obstructed by drooping upper lids, while others want to reduce puffiness, under-eye bags, or sagging skin that makes them appear tired.
Because no two patients age in the same way, each procedure is carefully tailored to individual needs. Eyelid surgery is also commonly combined with other facial rejuvenation treatments, such as a brow lift, BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, or laser resurfacing, to achieve more comprehensive, natural-looking results.

Depending on your goals, eyelid surgery can focus on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Each approach targets specific concerns and is tailored to deliver natural, refreshed results. Here are the different types of eyelid surgery:
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery involves placement of incisions in the natural crease of the upper lid, making them well hidden when the eyes are open. The excess skin and protruding fat are removed and the incision is closed. The procedure is completed in approximately 45-60 minutes.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery can correct conditions with an incision just below the lower lash line. Excess skin is removed through this incision. An incision hidden inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision) may also be used to correct lower eyelid conditions and redistribute or remove excess fat. The latter method leaves no visible scaring. The skin is then readjusted for a tighter fit and excess fat and skin is trimmed away.
Upper & Lower Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours to complete if both upper and lower eyelids are completed at the same time. Typically, a local anesthetic is combined with conscious sedation.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Patients need about a week to recover, and, for several weeks, you may have some swelling and redness in the eyelid areas. Sensitivity to light may also be experienced, so it is very important that you practice careful sun protection until the healing process is fully complete. Cold compresses and ointments to aid the healing process and reduce swelling may be used. Patients can usually return to work in approximately one week. Contact lenses may not be worn for two weeks. Eyes can be sensitive to light and wind and may be slightly irritated for a short while.
