Understanding Breast Reduction
Women who have over-sized breasts can often experience back pain, bra strap indentations, excessive drooping, general discomfort, and embarrassment. A breast reduction can go a long way in alleviating the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with overly large breasts. By removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, then tightening and contouring the remaining skin, breast reduction can make your breasts more proportionate to your body and achieve a more youthful-looking bust line.
Breast Reduction Procedures
Breast reduction differs from a breast lift in that it removes excess breast tissue to create smaller, better-proportioned breasts. In many cases, a breast lift is performed at the same time, particularly when large amounts of tissue are removed and incisions are required. The incisions used in breast reduction often follow patterns similar to breast lift techniques.
Incision Techniques
- Anchor Pattern – Involves an incision around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the crease. This approach is most effective for women with very large breasts but also results in the most visible scarring.
- Vertical Incision – Involves an incision around the areola and vertically down the breast. This technique is suitable for moderately large breasts and typically requires less extensive tissue removal.
- Short Scar Technique – Leaves smaller vertical scars that usually heal well due to their placement.

Liposuction Breast Reduction
In some cases, liposuction alone can reduce breast size by targeting fatty tissue. However, it cannot remove glandular tissue or excess skin. Liposuction is best for women with more fatty tissue than glandular tissue who do not require a large change in volume.
Nipple Repositioning
During breast reduction, the nipple is typically repositioned higher on the breast for a natural look. In cases of very large breasts, the nipple may need to be surgically removed and grafted into the correct position.

Recovery from breast reduction surgery usually takes about 2 weeks, in which case patients can normally return their job if its physically undemanding. Patients will normally experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for the first few days. Vigorous physical activities should be avoided for up to 6 weeks, as they may damage the healing process.
